25,000 drivers trained to date
Mumbai: India's third largest heavy commercial vehicle manufacturer Asia MotorWorks (AMW) is playing a key role in improving the skills and productivity of truck drivers across India with its 'Driver Training Program'. Since the program began AMW has trained over 25,000 drivers, with 9,000 completing the program in 2011-12.
The AMW Driver Training Program is conducted across India and is run out of the company's modern 'Truck Centre' at Hazira. Currently the program has at least two dedicated master driver trainers in each of the five regions of the country. This ensures that trainers are fluent in regional languages.
The program includes theoretical and practical elements that educate drivers about how to operate their advanced AMW trucks in order to maximize safety and profitability. Over a period of two to five days, batches of 10 to 15 drivers are given detailed information on the technical features of the truck, including proper operation of 9-speed and 6-speed gearboxes.
Drivers are also taught about the operation of the inter-axle locking system, exhaust brake application, advantages of bogie suspension and explanation of cabin features. They learn about safe tipping and loading procedures, and are also given tips on economical driving to improve fuel efficiency. The program also emphasises the importance of safe driving techniques.
Another important aspect of the program is that drivers are encouraged to conduct daily checks on their AMW trucks, giving particular emphasis to lubrication and tyre inflation. These go a long way in lowering operational and maintenance costs over the life of the vehicle.
